Watford have signed forward Mauro Zarate on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Serie A side Fiorentina for a fee of around £2.5 million.

The Argentinean returns to English football after having brief spells with West Ham United, QPR and Birmingham City.

The 29 year-old leaves Florence after 26 appearances and seven goals in Italy’s top-tier a season after leaving West Ham.

Watford also brought in Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley on loan earlier this month.

Watford will now hope that these transfers can help the steer themselves to Premier League safety with the Hornets eight points above the relegation zone.
