Lyon midfielder Gueïda Fofana has been forced to retire at the age of 25.
This is due to an ankle injury that specialist doctors have said he will never recover from.
The Frenchman began his career at French club AC Le Havre where he made 66 appearances before earning a move to former French champions Lyon for a deal rising to €2.6 million.
The former France under-21 international went on to play 104 games for Lyon scoring nine goals.
“I allowed for some time to see if my ankle would get better. I really have tried everything but today I sadly have to admit that it is no longer possible. The state that my ankle is in no longer allows me to play football… It is a terrible reality but I have been declared inapt to play football.”
