Aston Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has returned to Italy on a an 18-month loan deal to Italian Serie A side Atalanta.

The 21 year-old a former Manchester United reserve was one of Roberto di Matteo’s signing this summer who was in charge at the start of the season.

The young goalkeeper arrived from Italian second-tier side Hellas Verona for £4m in the summer transfer window.

The Italian kept his place for a short time when Steve Bruce replaced di Matteo as Villa boss in October.

However, after conceding 19 goals in his 20 Championship appearances, Gollini was dropped following a defeat at Norwich.

Atalanta sit in seventh place in Serie A ten points off the top while Villa are down in 13th.
